Albert Man’s second EP ‘NOTHING OF NOTHING MUCH’ will be his third release to date, and follows hot on the heels of his critically acclaimed 2016 album ‘CHEAP SUIT' which won Best Independent Album 2016 in the Alternative Friday Awards.
The EP started as a live session during an impromptu trip to Dublin where local musician and photographer, Dara Munnis, put together a bunch of local Dublin artists – Cormac Breslin (CC Brez, Republic of Loose) on guitar, Sarah Lynch (performed with Mumford and Sons, Ed Sheeran and The Strokes) on violin and Louize Carroll (CC Brez) on backing vocals – to perform one of Albert's songs, YOU HAD ME AT HELLO. The session was captured by Dublin-based filmmaker, Stephen Mogerley and the audio recording is now a bonus track on the EP.
The EP was written over the summer of 2016 and was recorded and mixed in record time over just three days on Pete Townshend’s floating recording studio, a 100 year old Dutch barge called the Grand Cru. Producer and guitarist Rhys Downing (Mark Ronson – ‘Uptown Special’) and a bunch of Albert’s musician friends worked tirelessly to get the EP finished on time and before the sea sickness kicked in.
Following in the footsteps of Randy Newman and Billy Joel, Albert Man has created classic, piano-led pop all wrapped up in some self-produced 80s-inspired artwork. The EP shows how he’s developed as a songwriter, creating heartfelt ballads that still retain the slightly quirky lyrical style he is know for, especially in the two upbeat tracks, RIDING SHOTGUN and first single, I FEEL LIKE DANCING.
Helping Albert out on “the boat that rocked” were Collette Williams (Rews, Huw Stephen’s pick for Radio 1's Best of BBC Music Introducing) on drums and backing vocals, delivering an amazing duet with Albert on the studio version of YOU HAD ME AT HELLO. Joe Garvey (Best of British Unsigned Music Awards, Best Male Nominee 2016) adding some backing vocals and Prince-inspired guitar to DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH, a song he helped co-write. Sarah Lynch and Dara Munnis, who were involved with the initial Dublin recording, both flew over from Ireland to record violin and piano on some of the tracks with Dara also documenting the whole three-day experience on his camera. Praised by BBC Radio Head of Music as a “brilliant singer-songwriter,” Albert Man is an “insightful artist to watch” according to Pledge Music’s managing editor Matt Conner. He has established himself as one of the more interesting songwriters on the London gig circuit with avid support from RockShot Magazine, who compared his songs to that of “Ben Folds in verse, wit and chord changes”. The award-winning, Manchester-born singer-songwriter plays both solo and with a full band, writing piano-led, melodic pop songs described by Fresh On The Net as “sweet piano led shenanigans that come over like the lovechild of Billy Joel and Adam Levine”.
He is set to release a brand new six-track EP “Nothing Of Nothing Much”, recorded at Pete Townshend's barge studio, in early 2017 and has already received airplay on BBC Introducing London for his new single “I Feel Like Dancing”. The same song was chosen for Tom Robinson's Fresh Faves on his Fresh On The Net blog in the same week, which is now the third time Albert has been featured – “I Feel Like Dancing, is the result of a highly professional quality of songwriting that, given the publicity, would easily scale the charts.” – Benji Tranter (Fresh On The Net). The music video for this single was premiered with Gigslutz, who commented that the EP “flows with emotion-strewn melodies and a witty lyricism”.
Albert released his eleven-track, self-produced album Cheap Suit in 2016, receiving airplay on both FUBAR Radio and BBC radio. The album won the “Best Independent Album” award on the Alternative Friday blog in 2016 and was described as “a wonderful wonderful album” by BBC presenter Ady Dayman. Two songs from this album were also chosen for Tom Robinson's Fresh Faves.
Albert recently featured on Best Of British Unsigned as “One to watch” saying they “love Albert's sound”. This was swiftly followed up with him being chosen as their featured artist of the day with presenter Matt Graveling saying “I think Albert Man could be in with a cheeky little shout for best unsigned male in next years Unsigned Music Awards 2017.”
He has been on London Live twice and BalconyTV, has played at The O2 Priority Lounge before Muse, The Verdi Room in The Royal Albert Hall, Sofar Sounds Liverpool, The Borderline supporting HamsandwicH, Ronnie Scott’s, Jimmy's Harvest Festival, The Half Moon Putney, The Barfly, The Garage, The Bedford, Hotel Café Royal, Servant Jazz Quarters, Night and Day in Manchester, The Grand Social in Dublin, Hard Rock Cafe's 45th birthday and was a finalist in the London Coffee Music Project. Having been described as “one of the most genuine, hard working artists on the live music scene with a steely work ethic”, he demonstrates this by the frequency at which he performs so keep your eye on his upcoming gigs list (www.albertman.com/gigs) to see when and where he’s playing next!
"A brilliant singer-songwriter" Tony Fisher (Head of Music, BBC Essex)
"Very very talented indeed" Ady Dayman (BBC Radio Leicester)
“We love his style, we love his sound. I think Albert Man could be in with a cheeky little shout for best unsigned male in next years Unsigned Music Award 2017.” Matt Graveling (Best of British Unsigned)
“The emphasis on new and emerging talent this is singer-songwriter Albert Man” Gary Crowley (BBC Introducing London)
"Nothing Of Nothing Much showcases Man’s distinct writing style and reflective lyrical storytelling." Mari Lane (Gigslutz)
“Albert Man is continually pushing the boundaries in his songwriting, developing complex songs that have many hooks and ear worms.” RockShot Magazine
“It’s the consistently high quality of songwriting and vocals throughout that mean this is the standout independently released album of 2016” Jim Cambo (Alternative Friday Awards 2016)
"Whether he's sharing personal stories or piercing social commentary, singer-songwriter Albert Man is an insightful artist to watch." Matt Conner (Pledge Music)
